# What is DeFi?

**DeFi** stands for **Decentralized Finance** — a broad term for financial services that run on the blockchain, without any bank, broker, or institution in the middle.

Think about everything you can do with a bank: save money, borrow money, trade currencies, earn interest. DeFi does all of that — but the rules are written in code, not set by humans, and anyone in the world can use them without needing approval.

## How does DeFi work? Smart contracts.

The engine behind DeFi is something called a **smart contract** — a program that lives on the blockchain and runs automatically when certain conditions are met.

Here's a simple analogy: imagine a vending machine. You put in money, select your item, and the machine dispenses it — no cashier needed, no discretion involved. Smart contracts work the same way: once the code is deployed, it executes exactly as written, every time, for anyone who interacts with it.

This means:

* **No middlemen** — you interact with code directly
* **No downtime** — smart contracts run 24/7
* **No discrimination** — anyone with a wallet can use them
* **Transparent** — the rules are public and auditable

## Key DeFi activities explained

### 🔄 Trading / Swapping

The most common DeFi activity. **Swapping** means exchanging one token for another — like a currency exchange bureau, but instant, 24/7, and without any broker taking a large cut.

On GDex Pro, you can swap hundreds of token pairs across multiple blockchains with a few clicks.

### 💰 Lending and Borrowing

In DeFi, you can **lend** your crypto to earn interest, or **borrow** crypto by putting up other crypto as collateral — all without a credit check or bank approval.

**Gemach's lending platform is** [**GLend**](https://docs.gemach.io/gemach-dao/products/glend) — it lets you supply assets to earn yield or borrow against your holdings algorithmically.

### 🌉 Bridging

Different blockchains (Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, etc.) are separate networks that don't natively talk to each other. **Bridging** is the process of moving tokens from one blockchain to another.

GDex Pro has a built-in [Bridge feature](https://docs.gemach.io/gemach-dao/products/gdex-pro/features/bridge-functionality) that handles this for you, supporting transfers across Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain, Solana, Arbitrum, Optimism, Sui, and more.

### 🌾 Yield Farming

When you provide liquidity to a DeFi protocol (essentially lending your tokens to a pool so others can trade against them), you earn **yield** — rewards paid in tokens for your contribution.

[**GVault**](https://docs.gemach.io/gemach-dao/products/gvault) is Gemach's yield product, designed to help you earn returns on your holdings.

### 📈 Perpetual Trading

DeFi also enables **perpetual futures trading** — leveraged trading on token prices without an expiry date. This is more advanced and carries higher risk, but GDex Pro supports it for users who want it. See [Perpetual Trading](https://docs.gemach.io/gemach-dao/products/gdex-pro/perpetual-trading-perp) for more.

## How Gemach fits into DeFi

**GDex Pro is your all-in-one DeFi dashboard.** Instead of jumping between five different protocols to trade, bridge, lend, and track your portfolio, GDex Pro brings it all together in one interface.

Here's a map of Gemach's DeFi products:

| Product | What it does |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **GDex Pro** | Trade, bridge, copy-trade, track your portfolio |
| **Gemach AI** | Use plain English to execute DeFi actions |
| **GLend** | Lend and borrow crypto |
| **GLoans** | Borrow against your crypto holdings |
| **GVault** | Earn yield on your assets |

{% hint style="info" %}
**Gemach AI** lets you do all of this using plain English commands — just type what you want to do (e.g., "swap 10 USDC for SOL" or "show me my portfolio performance this week") and the AI handles the rest. See [Gemach AI](https://docs.gemach.io/gemach-dao/products/gemach-ai) for more.

| ---------------- | ------------------------- | --------------------- |
| **Hours** | Business hours | 24/7/365 |
| **Access** | Requires bank account, ID | Anyone with a wallet |
| **Control** | Bank holds your funds | You hold your funds |
| **Fees** | High (intermediary costs) | Low (just gas fees) |
| **Transparency** | Opaque | Fully public on-chain |
